At Equine Connection we believe in something simple yet profound. The horse is not a product.
This magnificent being is not an object to be bought, sold, or used. A product is stagnant. A product has no heartbeat. A horse is a sentient being, filled with wisdom, emotion, and presence. When we forget this truth, we risk reducing them to tools, props, or instruments for our own purposes. And that is not what horses are here for.
Words Matter
Language shapes the way we think and the way we treat others. Too often in the horse world we hear phrases like “I used that horse today” or “we use the horse as a tool.”
Think about it. Would you say that about a human being? Would you say, “I used my friend today”? Of course not. We would say “I worked with them” or “I partnered with them.” Our horses deserve that same respect.
Horses feel everything we bring to them. When we choose words like partner or work with, it shifts not only our mindset but our energy. And horses pick up on that instantly.
Respecting the Horse’s Role
Equine assisted learning is not about using horses. It is about learning with horses. They are the teachers. They show us how our body language, our energy, and our choices affect those around us.
When programs or certifications claim to “use horses as barometers or tools,” they miss the heart of what makes this work powerful. A horse is not a barometer. A horse is not a whiteboard. We once saw an exercise where people wrote their negative thoughts on a horse’s body. Imagine that for a moment. Would you ever want someone to write their worst judgments on your skin? Why would we do that to a being who cannot give consent?
Instead, we use whiteboards, journals, or other objects for those exercises. Horses are not dumping grounds for human pain. They are teachers who guide us in releasing that pain. There is a profound difference.
Clients Feel It Too
Clients pick up on the way we frame our work. We have had clients cry during orientation simply because they did not feel worthy to stand in the presence of such magnificent creatures. That humility is beautiful. It shows respect for the horse as a sentient being.
When we frame our work as partnership instead of use, clients feel safer. They understand that the horse is not being forced, coerced, or treated as an object. Instead, they are engaging in a relationship where both horse and human are honoured. That shift alone can be life changing.
A Challenge for All of Us
We are not here to shame anyone. Many of us grew up in a culture where words like “use” were normal. You do not know what you do not know until you do. But once you know better, you do better.
So here is our challenge. The next time you catch yourself saying, “I used this horse,” stop and change it. Say instead, “I worked with this horse” or “I partnered with this horse.” Feel the difference in your body as you say it. Notice how your relationship with your horse begins to change.
Why It Matters
This small shift in language is about more than words. It is about honouring the welfare of the horse. It is about building programs with integrity. It is about showing clients that healing, growth, and learning happen best in true partnership, never through use.
At Equine Connection we are committed to building our certifications, our teachings, and our entire business on this foundation. Horses are not products. They are teachers. They are partners. They are beings deserving of our highest respect.
When you know better, you do better. Let us lead the way in changing the way the world speaks about and works with horses.
